Is Online Therapy as Effective as In-Person?
For most adults and most concerns, yes: controlled studies consistently find video-based psychotherapy produces outcomes equivalent to in-person treatment. What predicts success is the quality of the therapeutic relationship and consistency of sessions — not the room you sit in.

What does the research say?
Since 2020, teletherapy has been studied intensively; equivalence findings hold across anxiety, depression, and trauma-focused treatment. I have researched this transition myself — my conference paper “Are We Virtually Ready? The Experience of Mental Health Professionals in Teletherapy” (NACIACP 2021) examined how clinicians adapt depth work to video — and my years as a consultant psychologist on online platforms shaped how I structure remote sessions today.
Why does online therapy fit India particularly well?
- Access: qualified, RCI-licensed specialists are concentrated in a few metros; video removes geography.
- Privacy: no waiting rooms; sessions happen from your own space.
- Consistency: travel, traffic, and relocation stop breaking the weekly rhythm that therapy depends on.
What do you need for it to work?
A private room, earphones, a stable connection, and a protected hour. Depth-oriented work translates fully to video: the conversation, the noticing of patterns, even silences carry the same weight.
When is online therapy not appropriate?
Active psychiatric emergencies, acute suicidal risk, or situations needing in-person medical care require local, immediate support first. For ongoing psychotherapy for anxiety, depression, trauma, or relationship difficulties, online work is a first-class option — not a compromise. Book an online session here.
Common questions
Is online therapy confidential?
Yes. Sessions run over secure video with the same professional confidentiality as in-person therapy; you control the privacy of your own space.
Do online sessions cost less?
Fees are typically similar to in-person rates, but you save travel time and cost — which is often what makes weekly consistency possible.
