How to Choose a Clinical Psychologist in India

Choose a clinical psychologist in India by verifying three things: a valid RCI registration (the legal standard for the title), an approach that fits your problem, and a genuine sense of being understood in the first session. Credentials filter the list; fit makes the choice.

What does “RCI-licensed” actually mean?

The Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) is the statutory body that licenses clinical psychologists. The title legally requires an RCI-recognised professional training — typically an M.Phil in Clinical Psychology — and grants a Central Rehabilitation Register (CRR) number you can verify on the RCI website. Anyone can call themselves a “therapist” or “counsellor” in India; clinical psychologist is the protected, regulated credential.

Which credentials should you check?

How do you judge approach fit?

Match the method to the problem. A single, recent, well-defined symptom may respond to short-term structured work; difficulties that repeat across years and relationships call for depth-oriented, psychodynamic therapy. The differences are unpacked in psychodynamic therapy vs CBT.

What should you notice in the first session?

Whether you feel listened to rather than processed; whether questions are thoughtful rather than scripted; whether the psychologist can explain how they would work with your difficulty. A good first meeting clarifies even when the fit is wrong — here is what a first session involves.

What are the red flags?

Common questions

How do I verify an RCI license?

Ask for the psychologist's CRR number and check it against the Central Rehabilitation Register on the RCI website (rehabcouncil.nic.in). Licensed clinicians share it without hesitation.

Is an MA in psychology enough to practise as a clinical psychologist?

No. An MA is an academic degree. The clinical psychologist title legally requires RCI-recognised clinical training, typically an M.Phil in Clinical Psychology with supervised clinical hours.
