When Trauma Looks Like Depression

A significant share of what gets called treatment-resistant depression is unprocessed trauma wearing depression’s clothes: the flatness, fatigue, and retreat from people are not low mood so much as a system that shut down to survive.

Why do they look so alike?

Traumatic shutdown and depressive withdrawal share a surface: numbness, exhaustion, loss of interest, hopelessness. But one is a mood disorder; the other is a protective freeze that never lifted.

Clues the roots are traumatic

Why the distinction changes treatment

Mood-focused tools alone can leave the engine untouched. A careful assessment that takes your history seriously can tell the two apart — which is why therapy for trauma and depth-oriented treatment for depression begin the same way: by understanding what your symptoms are protecting you from, then treating the cause rather than managing its shadow.

Common questions

Can I have both trauma and depression?

Yes, commonly. Depth-oriented assessment maps how they interact so treatment addresses both rather than one masking the other.

What if antidepressants haven't helped?

Partial or fading response to mood treatment is a classic signal to assess for underlying trauma before concluding anything is 'resistant'.
