What Does Therapy Cost in India — and Is It Worth It?
Sessions with licensed clinical psychologists in India typically cost ₹1,000–₹4,000, depending on experience and city. Whether it is “worth it” is really a comparison: the visible cost of therapy against the quiet, compounding cost of the untreated pattern.

What are typical fees?
Metro-based senior clinicians charge more; early-career counsellors less. Online sessions usually match in-person fees but remove travel time and cost. My own current fees are listed transparently on the services page.
Why does therapy cost what it costs?
- You are buying a protected, one-to-one professional hour — there is no scale.
- Behind it sit years of clinical training (M.Phil), continuing education, and the therapist’s own paid supervision.
- Preparation, note-keeping, and reflection extend well beyond the session itself.
What does the untreated problem cost?
Anxiety that shrinks careers, conflict that erodes marriages, low mood that flattens years — these carry real costs in income, health, and relationships that dwarf a therapy fee. The expensive option is usually the pattern, not the treatment.
How do you get the most value from therapy?
- Commit to weekly rhythm: stop-start therapy costs more overall because momentum keeps resetting — see how long therapy takes.
- Choose depth over patching when the problem repeats: resolving the root beats re-buying relief — this is the logic of depth work.
- Verify credentials first: cheap but unlicensed help is the most expensive kind — see choosing a psychologist in India.
Common questions
Does insurance cover therapy in India?
Coverage is improving — the Mental Healthcare Act 2017 directed insurers to cover mental illness like physical illness — but implementation varies widely. Check your policy and employer EAP; many people still pay out of pocket.
Is cheaper therapy less effective?
Price does not equal quality, but qualifications do. A licensed, well-matched therapist at a moderate fee outperforms both the cheapest unlicensed option and the most expensive poor fit.
