Psychologist vs Psychiatrist vs Counsellor: Who Should You See?

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor (MBBS + MD) who diagnoses and prescribes medication. A clinical psychologist (RCI-licensed) assesses and treats through psychotherapy. A counsellor supports everyday difficulties — but the title is unregulated in India. Choose by the problem, not the label.

What does each professional actually do?

Who should you see first?

Can medication and therapy work together?

Yes, and often best. Medication can stabilise the storm; therapy changes the weather system. Psychiatrists and psychologists routinely collaborate on shared clients — I work alongside treating psychiatrists where medication is part of the picture.

Why does this distinction matter more in India?

Because anyone may advertise as a “therapist,” “healer,” or “mind coach.” The regulated titles — psychiatrist (MCI/NMC) and clinical psychologist (RCI) — are your quality floor. Check them first, then choose for fit.

Common questions

Can a psychologist prescribe medication in India?

No. Prescription is a psychiatrist's role. A clinical psychologist provides assessment and psychotherapy, and refers to a psychiatrist when medication may help.

Do I need a referral to see a clinical psychologist?

No. You can book directly with a clinical psychologist in India — no referral or diagnosis is required to begin therapy.
