Why Insight Changes Behaviour — When Willpower Doesn’t
Willpower fights behaviour at the surface and loses to whatever drives it. Insight works differently: when the unconscious purpose of a pattern becomes conscious, the pattern loses its necessity. That is why understanding changes what discipline could not.

Why does willpower keep failing?
Because symptoms are not malfunctions — they are solutions. Procrastination protects against judgment; distance protects against loss; the defenses hold something in place. Fighting the behaviour while its job remains is fighting your own security system.
What is insight, exactly?
Not information. Reading about attachment is knowledge; feeling the moment your withdrawal is your father’s silence in your own body — that is insight. It is emotional, specific, and lived. This is why podcasts and self-help books explain patterns yet rarely dissolve them.
What is the mechanism of change?
Psychodynamic work makes the unconscious conscious. While a pattern operates outside awareness it functions as necessity; once seen — in real time, as it happens — it becomes a choice point. Repetition of that seeing, inside an emotionally significant relationship, is what rewires: the pattern is not suppressed but outgrown.
Why does the therapy relationship matter so much?
Insight lands only where there is safety — and the relationship is also where patterns show up live (transference), which makes it the laboratory as well as the container. This is the substance behind an intriguing research finding: psychodynamic therapy’s gains tend to keep growing after therapy ends — the sleeper effect. You leave with the function that produced the change, not just the change.

Common questions
Isn't insight just overthinking?
No — they point in opposite directions. Overthinking circles the surface to avoid feeling; insight drops beneath the surface into what is felt. One exhausts, the other releases.
How is insight different from getting advice?
Advice adds instructions on top of the pattern; insight removes the pattern's necessity from below. Advice needs enforcement; insight doesn't.
