The Pursue-Withdraw Cycle: Why One of You Chases and One Shuts Down

In most stuck couples, the fight is not about the dishes. One partner pursues — raising the issue, the volume, the stakes — and the other withdraws into silence or logic. Each move triggers the other, and the cycle, not either person, becomes the problem.

How the loop feeds itself

The pursuer escalates because silence feels like abandonment; the withdrawer retreats because escalation feels like attack. Both are protecting themselves — and each protection confirms the other’s fear. After enough rounds, the pattern runs on autopilot within seconds.

Why it is nobody’s fault (and both partners’ job)

Pursuing and withdrawing are attachment strategies, not character flaws — usually visible in each partner’s attachment history. Blame keeps the cycle spinning; naming it as a shared enemy is the first move out.

How couples therapy interrupts the cycle

In session, the cycle can be slowed to walking pace: what the pursuer’s anger protects (fear of not mattering), what the withdrawer’s silence protects (fear of failing). Emotionally Focused Therapy — the backbone of online couples therapy — helps partners say the softer thing underneath, which is the message the cycle was drowning out.

Common questions

Which partner needs to change first?

Neither and both — the target is the cycle. When either partner responds differently, the loop weakens; therapy helps you do it together.

Can this pattern change after many years?

Yes. The cycle is learned choreography, not personality. Long-standing loops take consistency to shift, but they shift.
